A New Forest Gym in The Cape Winelands

Hidden beneath a canopy of indigenous trees on the banks of the Eerste River, Spier Hotel’s new gym offers a unique hotel fitness experience. Reached via a path that winds beyond the pool and into the forest, the new riverside pavilion combines the energy of a proper workout space with the stillness of its surroundings.
Floor-to-ceiling glazing opens the room onto the river and surrounding trees, while a timber deck extends towards the water. A built-in window seat provides a space to pause between workouts, catch your breath or watch the river pass.

The architecture is deliberately understated. The exterior is clad in Shou Sugi Ban, the centuries-old Japanese technique of charring timber, giving the building its deep dark finish and allowing the space to settle naturally into the forest. Inside, untreated timber walls bring warmth and a subtle woody fragrance, while the extensive glazing fills with natural light.

The gym is equipped with Technogym equipment and free weights, alongside a boxing tower, yoga mats and a dedicated stretching area. Designed exclusively for hotel guests, it caters to both structured workouts and more leisurely movement, whether that means a morning cardio session, strength training or simply stretching after a day spent exploring the farm.
The pavilion joins Spier’s existing wellness offering, which includes the spa and Cape Herbal Bath House, heated pool, Movement Studio and walking and running trails through The Wilds. What makes this space memorable is how present nature feels as you exercise. The river is always in view, and the trees move in the breeze, creating a deep sense of calm whilst moving.
